Subtitles

A sub-page of Streams. These settings are used when the subtitle stream (PES) is generated from XML (BDN), SRT or VTT subtitles.

Allow overlapping subtitles - keeps subtitles whose times overlap as they are. A subtitle stream can show up to two images at the same time, so overlapping subtitles neither have to be split nor merged. For XML subtitles, a warning is written to the Log window wherever more than two images would be visible at the same time. If this is unchecked, overlapping subtitles are treated as errors or corrected, according to the verification settings below.

Encoding - the encoding of SRT and VTT files: UTF-8 (the default) or Unicode (UTF-16). It is used to read these files and to save the corrected files after the autocorrection (with a BOM).

XML verification, SRT/VTT verification: Do not validate / Stop on errors / Autocorrect, if possible - defines how the subtitles are corrected while the PES is generated. We recommend using "Do not validate" and correcting the subtitles manually in the Subtitles window.

Minimum duration (frames) - the minimum duration of a subtitle in the XML and SRT/VTT formats. Shorter subtitles are extended to this value (def: 6).

Remove zero-duration subtitles - with "Autocorrect, if possible", removes the subtitles whose end time is not after the start time, and a subtitle that has exactly the same start and end time as the previous one, instead of stopping with an error (def: on).

Minimum distance between subtitles (frames) - the minimum distance between subtitles in the XML and SRT/VTT formats. Smaller gaps are extended to this value (def: 4).

Minimum distance from chapter (frames) - the minimum distance between a chapter and the start of a subtitle, in the XML format only (it does not apply to SRT/VTT). Smaller gaps are extended to this value (def: 4). Zero means "not used". This setting takes only movie chapters into account; playlists are ignored.

Adjust timing for 23,976 fps by default - enables Adjust timing for 23,976 fps by default. It adjusts the timing for movies with 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94 fps (the time is multiplied by 0.999).

Apply corrections

The "Apply corrections" button of the Subtitles window opens a dialog with the three minimum duration and distance settings and "Remove subtitles with zero length or identical time" (the same as "Remove zero-duration subtitles" above). The dialog starts with the values of these project settings, and they work as described above. Clicking OK autocorrects the subtitle file open in the window (as with "Autocorrect, if possible"), saves the result as %file_name%_corrected and opens it in the window. The values entered in the dialog are used only for this correction; the project settings do not change.
