Add and delete subtitles

Select a subtitle track in the movie properties and click the button on the right:

A window will pop up:

File - lets you select a subtitle file. The following subtitle formats are supported:

We recommend converting SRT/VTT/DOST to BDN.xml manually in Subtitles window.

Common settings

Language - the language of the subtitles.

Adjust timing for 23,976 (except PES) - adjusts the timing of the subtitles to the 23.976 frame rate (multiplying it by 0.999). Recommended for SRT/VTT only.

Add/Subtract drop-down list (except PES) - lets you adjust the timing of the subtitles by adding or subtracting the specified value.

HDR - converts the subtitles so that they do not look too bright in the HDR color space, using the settings from the Project properties. After conversion will replace the current subtitles with the converted version and uncheck this flag.

Framerate and Regenerate subtitle stream (except PES) - let you regenerate the subtitle stream. You only need this button if you want to regenerate the subtitle stream without exporting again.

Settings for BDN

Adjust time/position - opens the subtitle adjustment window, where you can adjust the X/Y coordinates and the start/end time of each subtitle.

Crop PNGs - lets you crop full-screen PNGs (full color images only).

Settings for DoSt

Convert to BDN.xml - converts the subtitles to the BDN.xml format. In the BDN.xml format you can use the "Adjust time/position" and "Crop PNGs" functions.

Settings for SRT/VTT

Top line offset, % and Bottom offset, %

Top line offset - defines the position of the top line of the subtitle block as a percentage of the screen height, measured from the bottom of the screen. A value of 20 at 1920x1080 means that the subtitles start below line 216 (counted from the bottom). In other words, the subtitles are placed at the top of a block that is pinned to the bottom of the screen and whose height is given as a percentage. This option fixes the position of the first line of the subtitles.
Bottom offset - defines the line above which all subtitles are placed. This option fixes the position of the last line of the subtitles.

IMPORTANT:
For the internal multiplexer and for Scenarist, the offset is given as a percentage.
For tsMuxeR it depends on the settings of the subtitle generator: the offset is given either as a percentage or in pixels, but it is always relative to the bottom edge.
The 8-bit (old engine) renderer always uses the top line offset.

Renderer - the list of possible renderers. We recommend using the default 32-bit renderer.

32-bit - creates 32-bit PNGs with a 256-color palette.
8-bit - creates 8-bit PNGs (true 256 colors) without semi-transparent colors.
8-bit (old engine) - creates 8-bit PNGs (true 256 colors) without semi-transparent colors, using the old subtitle engine.

Horizontal crop - crops the images on the left and right so that you can move them.

Font - the fonts used to render text subtitles.

Show preview - click it to see a preview of the rendered text.

Convert to BDN.xml - converts the subtitles to the BDN.xml format and replaces the input file. In the BDN.xml format you can use the "Adjust time/position" function, which lets you adjust the subtitles visually.

Settings for PES

PES offset in PTS - some PES files use a PTS offset of 54000000 (10 minutes), others use 0. Here you can specify a custom offset.

The PES files are created during the compilation of the disc. If you have changed a subtitle file or replaced a movie, open the corresponding subtitle track and click OK so that the PES file is re-created during the next compilation.

When subtitles are imported from an SRT/VTT file, a folder named after the subtitle file is created. It contains:

When subtitles are imported from a BDN.xml, a file named %file_name%_corrected.xml is created in the subtitle folder. It contains the corrected subtitles (minimum subtitle length, minimum distance between subtitles). This is the file that was actually imported, and you can compare it with the original one.

You can also drag a subtitle file directly onto a movie in the Project Tree or in the Properties window; it is placed into the first empty subtitle slot. A confirmation dialog appears:

Language code - the detected language of the subtitles; you can correct it here.

Time offset - adds or subtracts the specified value from the subtitle timing, same as the Add/Subtract setting below.

HDR - shown only for a UHD project and only for the subtitle types the conversion applies to (SRT, VTT, BDN.xml, DoSt). Same as the HDR setting below.

Do not ask in this session of this project - remembers the time offset and the HDR choice and applies them to every subtitle file you drop afterwards, without asking again, until the project is closed or reloaded. The language code is not being remembered.
